2024 Elections: Police Investigate NDC Deputy General Secretary For Inflammatory Comments

The Ghana Police Service says it has commenced investigations into some incitful comments attributed to the Deputy General Secretary of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mustapha Gbandi.

According to the police, it is investigating the comment which seeks to incite violence in the 2024 general elections in line with Ghana’s laws.

“The attention of the Police has been drawn to a statement allegedly made by one Mr. Mustafa Gbandi on Okay FM, an Accra-based radio station which seeks to incite violence during the 2024 general elections.

“Police have commenced investigations into the matter in line with the laws and democratic values of the country,” the police stated in a statement on Thursday, December 21, 2023.

In a media interview, Mustapha Gbandi called on members of his party to arm themselves when going to polling stations in 2024 as a means of ensuring free and fair elections against the schemes of the ruling New Patriotic Party.

“I have told the leadership of the NDC that we have to prepare in advance for the NPP ahead of the elections. When we are going to the polling station, let’s carry with us cutlasses. If we do, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) will not be able to misbehave towards us,” he stated.

Stakes remain high for Ghana’s 2024 presidential and parliamentary elections, as the ruling NPP has stated its resolve to maintain power while the opposition NDC insists it is poised to capture power.

Meanwhile, there is an indication of a third force emerging in the elections with the formation of an independent political movement by former NPP flagbearer hopeful Alan Kyerematen.

However, according to the Ghana Police Service, it remains committed to maintaining the peace and security of the country and will not allow any attempt to undermine security in the country.

“The Police will continue to work with other sister security agencies diligently and patriotically to maintain peace and security in our country, which has made Ghana a beacon of hope on the continent and beyond.

“We wish to assure the public that under our watch, no one will be allowed to undermine the peace, security, law and order in our beloved country,” the police said.
