A US Navy SEAL was killed in Arizona during a free-fall parachute training exercise.
According to a statement given to Fox News by the Naval Special Warfare Command, Chief Special Warfare Operator Michael Ernst was taken to Banner University Medical Center in Phoenix on Sunday, February 19, after the tragic training accident at an airfield in Marana, where he was pronounced dead.
The Navy stated that it would be “inappropriate” to speak further about the tragedy until the cause of the disaster had been determined.
Rear Adm. Keith Davids, the chief of Navy Special Warfare Command, said, “Our thoughts and prayers are with the Ernst family.”
Ernst was part of a Naval Special Warfare unit on the East Coast at the time of the event.
Ernst joined the Navy in August 2009, and three years later, he joined the SEAL community.
Enrst was given a Silver Star, which is the third-highest award for bravery in battle, a Defense Meritorious Service Medal, and three Combat Action Ribbons because he fought in combat in three different theaters of war while he was in the military.
“Mike was an exceptional teammate. “He was a dedicated NSW Sailor who applied his talents and skills towards some of our nation’s hardest challenges while selflessly mentoring his teammates,” Adm. Keith Davids said.
