In a dramatic Round of 16 clash at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, DR Congo has eliminated Egypt, the record champions, after a penalty shootout victory on Sunday, January 28.
The match, held at the Laurent Pokou Stadium, saw DR Congo take the lead in the 37th minute when Meschack Elia scored with a close-range header.
Responding to the challenge, Egypt managed to level the score before halftime with Mostafa Mohamed converting a penalty kick.
Despite both teams pushing for a decisive goal in the second half, neither side could find the back of the net.
Egypt faced further challenges when Mohamed Hamdi received a red card in the 100th minute, reducing them to 10 men.

With the score still tied after extra time, the match was ultimately decided by a penalty shootout.
DR Congo emerged victorious, securing a spot in the quarter-finals and eliminating Egypt from the 34th edition of the Africa Cup of Nations.
