Burna Boy Explains Why He Hasn’t Endorsed Any Nigerian Political Party

Grammy award-winning afrobeats musician Burna Boy, has explained to his followers why he went silent during the 2023 election.

Burna has a few songs that are about politics, such as 20.10.20, in which he criticized the government for how it handled the #EndSARS protests and the Lekki Massacre. Because of this, many of his fans are unhappy with his decision to stay quiet during these important times.

In an Instagram post, he said that many people have taken offense at him not being as outspoken about the election as his other colleagues. He went on to say that he didn’t back any candidate or political party since he didn’t believe they’d keep their promises.

Burna Boy stated that he has no intention of publicly endorsing a political party in an effort to persuade voters and also the public would turn against him if the party won the election but did not fulfill their promises.

He wrote on his Instagram stories saying “I don’t know why it’s such a big deal to some Nigerians that I’ve not been vocal about the elections. Personally I don’t have a candidate that I believe in. I’ve never supported any political party or candidate in my life because I don’t want to make you vote and then blame me when the person f**ks up as usual. That being said, I hope all votes count and the best man wins”.

Burna had earlier urged the Independent National Electoral Commission to appropriately count the ballots of the people, since there had been allegations of election misconducts against the commission from various sources.
