Cynthia Erivo Is Elphaba in ‘Wicked’, the Movie Adaptation of the Hit Broadway Musical

Cynthia Erivo, the award-winning actress and singer, is set to play Elphaba, the Wicked Witch of the West, in the movie adaptation of the hit Broadway musical “Wicked.” The movie, which is scheduled to be released on November 27, 2024, is a prequel to ‘The Wizard of Oz’, and tells the story of the friendship and rivalry between Elphaba and Glinda, the Good Witch.

Erivo plays Elphaba, a young woman who is born with green skin and has a powerful talent for magic. She attends Shiz University, where she meets Glinda, a popular and bubbly blonde who is also a witch. The two become unlikely friends, but their bond is tested by their different views on politics, love, and destiny. As Elphaba becomes an outcast and a rebel, Glinda becomes a celebrity and a leader. The movie explores how they become the iconic witches of Oz, and how their choices affect the fate of the land.

The movie is directed by Jon M. Chu, who is known for his musical and comedy films such as “Crazy Rich Asians,” “In the Heights,” and “Now You See Me 2.” The movie is co-written by Winnie Holzman, who wrote the book for the musical, and Stephen Daldry, who was originally attached to direct the movie.

The movie also stars Ariana Grande as Glinda, James Corden as the Wizard, Idina Menzel as Morrible, Kristin Chenoweth as Nessarose, Ben Platt as Fiyero, and Billy Porter as Dr. Dillamond. The movie features the original songs from the musical, composed by Stephen Schwartz, as well as new songs written for the movie.
