Ghanaian Born Edward Enninful Named UK’s Most Powerful Black Person

Edward Enninful, the editor-in-chief of British Vogue, has been named UK’s most influential black person for 2024.

Powerful Media’s annual list recognizes individuals of African, African Caribbean, and African American heritage and aims to inspire young people by highlighting black role models.

The list for 2024 also includes Afua Kyei, the chief financial officer of the Bank of England, and Steven Bartlett, a Dragon’s Den star and podcaster.

Enninful, who is the first black man to hold the top job at British Vogue, will be stepping down to focus on growing the brand globally and pursuing other projects. He also serves as the European editorial director of Condé Nast.

The Powerlist acknowledges exceptional individuals from various fields, encompassing business, science, technology, and the arts. Among the notable figures listed for 2024 are Lord Woolley of Woodford, who co-founded Operation Black Vote and serves as a principal at Cambridge University’s Homerton College.

Additionally, Munroe Bergdorf, a prominent model and activist, is also recognized. The list also features comedian Mo Gilligan and entrepreneur Patricia Bright, further highlighting their contributions and influence. Past recipients of the top spot on the Powerlist include Jacky Wright, the former chief digital officer and corporate vice-president at Microsoft US, seven-time Formula One champion Sir Lewis Hamilton, and former Children’s Laureate Malorie Blackman.

Who is Edward Enninful

Edward Kobina Enninful OBE is a Ghanaian-born British editor and stylist who was the editor-in-chief of British Vogue and the European editorial director of Condé Nast.

Enninful’s career in the fashion industry began at the age of 18 when he was appointed as the fashion director of i-D, a British fashion magazine. He held this position for over 20 years and went on to become a contributing fashion editor at Vogue Italia and American Vogue, as well as the creative fashion director at W magazine. Enninful’s unique style and vision made him a prominent figure in the industry, and in 2017, he was appointed as the editor-in-chief of British Vogue. However, he stepped down from this position after a brief tenure in 2023.
