Inaki Williams Shines For Athletic Bilbao Despite Struggles With Black Stars

Despite his struggles in front of goals for the Black Stars, Inaki Williams sustained his incredible form at club level as he scored his third goal in the Spanish La Liga this season by inspiring Athletic Bilbao to victory over Deportivo Alaves on Friday evening.

At the Estadio Mendizorrotza, Williams also provided an assist to help the Athletic Club defeat Alaves 2-0. After being put up by midfielder Mikel Vesga, he gave Bilbao the lead in the 18th minute with a skillful finish. After receiving a pass from Inaki Williams, Oihan Sancet extended the lead for Bilbao in the 76th minute to secure their second away victory of the season.

Inaki Williams played the entire game while his brother Nico Williams was out due to a muscular injury he sustained during the break in international play. Since the start of the 2023–24 season, the 28-year-old has been crucial for Bilbao, having contributed five goals after six games. He has two assists along with three goals.

Williams’s lack of form for the Black Stars has become topical in recent times. To substantiate the discourse, former Ghanaian international Augustine Arhinful offered a remedy to the problem.

“He is not receiving the necessary services from the Black Stars. I believe he is being played out of position because in Bilbao he plays from the flanks. He has never been the central striker, so the coach should identify where he can play and fit him,” Ahinful said in a recent interview with Graphic Sports.
