As A Result Of The Minority’s Contempt Charges, Jean Mensa Will Be Brought Before The Privileges Committee

If Electoral Commission Chairwoman Jean Mensa does not appear before the House as requested by Speaker Alban Bagbin last week, she will be brought before the Privileges Committee.

While the Minority Caucus has stated their opposition to the Constitutional Instrument (CI) before the House that would make the Ghana Card the sole instrument for voter registration, Mr. Bagbin has demanded the appearance of Mrs. Mensa.

Tru News Report recalls that a few days ago, It was claimed by the NDC that the EC Chairperson’s absence from the House of Representatives to address questions on the CI was due to her lack of respect for Parliament.

Nevertheless, the EC of Ghana has disproven this claim. The Commission said that the Chairperson had been called away on an election observation trip to Nigeria, leaving her two deputies to stand in for her in the parliament.

At the next meeting of the committee with officials from the commission and the National Identification Authority, Speaker Alban S.K. Bagbin asked that the chairperson, Jean Mensah, come to the briefing and represent the body at the highest level possible (NIA).

On the other hand, the EC has swiftly responded to the claim and stated categorically that Jean Mensa had travelled to Nigeria to observe their elections there when the invitation was extended to her.

The electoral body added that Jean has not disrespected the legislature as being portrayed by the minority in parliament. The release further added that the EC designated Dr Bossman Asare to represent the EC boss but the minority insisted they wanted Jean herself, leading to the cancellation of the proposed meeting.
