Kennedy Agyapong Disagrees With The EC’s CI On The Ghana Card Being The Only Way To Register To Vote

Kennedy Agyapong, member of parliament for Assin Central, has voiced his disapproval of a proposed Constitutional Instrument (CI) that would require new voters to present just their Ghana Cards as proof of identity.

Parliament is now debating the Election Commission’s proposed CI, with the opposition caucus strongly opposing it and the majority supporting it.

Kennedy Agyapong shared his thoughts on the topic during an interview with Kumasi’s Sompa FM saying, “Any country whose people are not proud of their country is doomed to fail.” When you are talking to an American, even Ghanaians who are American citizens are so proud to hold an American passport. people taking bogus decisions, and I wonder those who sit there and take such decisions.”

“That a whole Ghana passport, you claim that to register to vote, we won’t allow use of the Ghana passport, we have lost our identity to National Identification, what? I’m against, what makes me know I am a Ghanaian? It is my passport,” he said.

He also disagreed with the EC’s allegation that many non-Ghanaians own Ghanaian passports; he said, “The same goes for these Ghana Cards; non-Ghanaians have them too.”

The bill seeks to change the existing law to make the Ghana Card the only acceptable form of identity for the registration of new voters, eliminating the use of passports and the guarantor system.
