Patrick Mahomes Earns His 2nd NFL MVP Award Prior To The Super Bowl

Patrick Mahomes dominated the AP NFL Most Valuable Player award voting. He will now attempt to break the MVP curse.

Mahomes, who also won in 2018, beat Jalen Hurts easily. A nationwide panel of league-regular media members gave 48 of 50 first-place votes to Mahomes. He received 490 points compared to 193 for Hurts, who received one first-place vote, 26 second-place votes, 11 third-place votes, and 10 fourth-place votes.

Sunday’s Super Bowl pits Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs (16-3) against Hurts and the Philadelphia Eagles (16-3).

“I want to thank God for giving me this platform and putting so many amazing people around me to help support this dream I’ve had since I was a little kid. Without Him none of this would even be possible,” Mahomes said in a videotaped speech.

“‘To my wife, Brittany, baby girl, Sterling and my son, Bronze, this crazy life that we are living is nothing without y’all keeping me balanced and making me appreciate every single day.

“No matter how I feel coming home, y’all bring me joy and make me appreciate the time I get to spend with y’all. Thank you for always being there for me; through my good times and my bad. Love y’all.

“To my family; my mom, my dad, my brother and sister – thank you for supporting me every day and telling me since I was a little kid, to follow my dreams.

“To the Chiefs organization; Clark Hunt, Brett Veach, Andy Reid, the staff, and most of all, my teammates. I would never be standing here today without y’all.

“Every day giving everything that we have together to go for the ultimate goal; the Super Bowl. Let’s continue to go for that dream this weekend.

Sunday’s Super Bowl will feature Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs (16-3) versus Hurts and the Philadelphia Eagles (16-3).

The last nine Super Bowl MVPs from that season are winless. After the 1999 season, Kurt Warner was the last player to win both the MVP award and the Super Bowl.

Josh Allen, quarterback of the Buffalo Bills, received the remaining first-place vote and finished third with 151 points. The Bengals’ Joe Burrow and the Vikings’ Justin Jefferson, the AP NFL Offensive Player of the Year, finished fourth and fifth, respectively.

Denny Kellington got one vote from ESPN’s Suzy Kolber for helping to treat Damar Hamlin after he had a heart attack on the football field against Cincinnati on January 2.
