Prince Harry Sues Tabloid, The Mail, For Defamation Over Security Story

Prince Harry is suing the Mail on Sunday for defamation over an article that discussed his request for police protection when he and his family go to the United Kingdom.

The prince’s attorneys contended in court that the piece was “fundamentally inaccurate” and that the publisher’s claim that it conveyed a “honest opinion” did not hold up. Harry was absent from the courtroom for the hearing.

London’s High Court ruled in July that the Mail report was defamatory – paving the way for Harry to take the case forward against one of Britain’s biggest media publishers.

Harry and Meghan lost their publicly paid UK police protection in 2020, when they resigned as senior working royals and relocated to the United States. According to Harry’s attorneys, he is hesitant to send Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet to his homeland due to safety concerns.

The prince desires to pay for his own police protection when he visits the United Kingdom, but the government has stated that this is not possible. A judge granted Harry permission to sue the government a year ago. This case has not yet been tried.

In February 2022, the Mail published an article with the headline “Exclusive: How Prince Harry tried to…” According to Harry’s solicitor, Justin Rushbrooke, Associated Newspapers’ defence was devoid of any factual basis. He requested that the court rule in favour of Harry without a trial. But, Associated Newspapers’ attorney Andrew Caldecott contended that the company has a solid “honest opinion” argument.

The trial for Harry’s phone-hacking claim against the Daily Mirror tabloid will begin in May. The highly anticipated autobiography of Prince Harry, Spare, will be released internationally the following week. In it, he describes an alleged physical assault by his brother William.

The disagreement escalated to the point when William “grabbed me by the collar, ripping my necklace, and … knocked me to the floor.” Spare is sure to cause a major scandal inside the British royal family.
