Will Smith, Martin Lawrence Announce ‘Bad Boys 4’ Movie

In a joyful Instagram video broadcast on Tuesday, Will Smith and Martin Lawrence announced a reunion for a fourth Bad Boys film.

Smith’s first new project since slapping Chris Rock at last March’s Oscars program when the host made a remark about the actor’s wife, Jada Pinkett-Smith, resulting in a 10-year ban from the Academy Awards.

A regretful and oftentimes-morose Smith has been on a public apology tour ever since, but was in high spirits — seemingly back to the characteristically energetic, good-natured persona he was long known before the attack on Rock — in announcing Bad Boys 4.

In the Instagram video, Smith teases a major announcement while filming himself driving in excitement. Then he knocks on the door of a residence, where Lawrence greets him. As he opens the door, his longtime co-star says, “Is it about that time?”

“It’s about that time,” Smith says, filming the both of them, selfie-style. “It’s official! Bad Boys 4 Life, y’all!”

Smith and Lawrence follow with some amusing banter about their last film, the 2020 threequel Bad Boys for Life, already employing that title.

“We shouldn’t have called it that,” cracks Smith.

“Bad Boys For Life”, which was released in January 2020, demonstrated that there is still a huge demand for the buddy cop comedy adventures of Smith and Lawrence. The sequel grossed $204 million in the United States alone, becoming the highest-grossing film of 2020 when theaters shut down in mid-March due to COVID-19.

Bad Boys 4 will once again be directed by Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah, who succeeded Michael Bay for the previous sequel and recently made waves for directing the cancelled Batgirl movie.

The announcement marks a significant return for Smith, whose forthcoming projects were reportedly delayed as a result of the incident at the Oscars in 2022.

Netflix “quietly paused” his CIA drama Fast and Loose, according to The Hollywood Reporter, while Sony postponed work on Bad Boys 4, in July, Lawrence refuted the assumption that Bad Boys 4 will not be made, assuring Ebony that “at least” one more sequel was still in the works.

Bad Boys 4 could be just the vehicle Smith needs to rev up his career again.
