2023 President’s Cup: Hearts Of Oak Beat Rivals Kotoko 1-0 To Claim Bragging Right

Hearts of Oak have beaten their bitterest rival Kumasi Asante Kotoko by a lone goal in the Ghana Premier League.

The crucial goal was scored by Caleb Amankwah in the 57 minutes to move the Phobians to the 5th position in the league with 31 points.

During the last eight meetings between the two giants at the Accra Sports Stadium, Hearts of Oak have won twice, with two of the matches ending in draws while Asante Kotoko have won four times. The goal difference is 7-5 in favour of Asante Kotoko.

Although the game happens to be a league game, it also served as the 2023 version of the commemorative President’s Cup that is played to mark Ghana’s independence anniversary.

The Ghana League Clubs Association (GHALCA), which is in charge of organizing the game, announced that it has reached an agreement with the various stakeholders to use the Ghana Premier League matchday 20 clash between Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko as the President’s Cup.

GHALCA in a statement on Happy FM revealed;

The Ghana League match between giants, Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko_SC scheduled for Sunday March 5 in Accra, will serve as the 2023 President’s Cup.The winner of the tie will be crowned champion with President Nana Akufo-Addo in attendance.

The reason for using the Premier League clash between the two Ghanaian giants on Sunday, March 5, 2023, according to GHALCA president Kudjoe Fianoo, is due to the football calendar’s tight schedule.

We went to the World Cup, so the league had to go on break. We have been looking for a date, and we had to turn our attention to the league fixtures because there was no free day due to how the season is packed. The winner of the match will get GHC 50,000 and the runner-up will get ₵30,000,
