2024 Elections: I Never Predicted Bawumia-Mahama Face-Off

Alban Bagbin, the Speaker of Parliament, has denied claims that he has predicted a runoff between ex-President John Mahama and current Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia in the 2024 presidential elections.

Speaker Bagbin denied making the predictions after it was reported that he did so during his visit to the Yagbonwura in Damongo on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of uninterrupted parliamentary democracy in Ghana.

In a statement released by the Parliament’s Public Affairs Directorate, the Speaker stated that he would not comment on the outcome of the 2024 elections. According to the official statement, the event in question “involved the Speaker making reference to the two politicians,” but it “was not an exercise in prediction.”

“He suggested that what should be of interest to the people in northern Ghana, in which context he was speaking, is that they will be well represented at the apex of Ghana’s political structure, and that should be a source of pride to them,” parts of the statement reads.

Also, Alban Bagbin reaffirmed his willingness to collaborate with parliamentarians of every party for the sake of all Ghanaians.

“The Rt. Hon. Speaker explained that despite political differences, we are one people with a common destiny. Our common goal therefore should be to work towards the common good of all Ghanaians, irrespective of our political differences.”

At the end of the statement, the group asked the media to be careful about what they cover and to avoid sensational stories that could cause divisions in the country.
