AFCON 2023: Ghana To Play Namibia In Pre-Tournament Friendly

Ghana is gearing up for AFCON 2023 by testing its strength against Namibia. In light of the poor condition of the pitch at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium where the match would be played, Chris Hughton conducted a thorough inspection and decided to move the team’s training to the Dr Kwame Kyei Sports Complex.

However, efforts are being made to improve the pitch’s condition for the upcoming game. On Friday, Hughton and the technical team visited the stadium to assess the field and ensure it meets the necessary standards. The friendly match against Namibia holds great significance for both teams as they prepare for the AFCON tournament.

Ghana, placed in Group B, will face tough competition from Cape Verde, Egypt, and Mozambique. After the friendly, the Black Stars will spend two additional days in Kumasi before heading to Ivory Coast for the tournament.

Their determination to deliver a stellar performance in the competition is evident, and the friendly against Namibia presents an ideal opportunity to fine-tune their preparations.

In a previous report about the Black Stars, Tru News Report mentioned that in anticipation of the upcoming 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), the Ghana Football Association (GFA) is set to enforce stringent security measures around the Black Stars’ training camp in Kumasi.

This decisive move comes following a strategic shift in the team’s training location from South Africa to Kumasi.

Henry Asante Twum, the spokesperson for the Ghana FA, disclosed that the decision to bolster security protocols is a proactive response to the relocation of the training camp.

The comprehensive security overhaul includes collaboration with both the police and military forces to ensure the safety and focused preparation of the national squad.

Originally intended for South Africa, the recalibration of the training camp’s location prompted a meticulous reassessment of security arrangements to align with the new setting in Kumasi.

The national team’s preparations include a crucial friendly match against Namibia, strategically designed to fine-tune their competitive edge ahead of the main AFCON event.

Asante emphasised the proactive stance of the FA, stating, “The FA is taking steps to beef up security at the hotel. There is an advanced team in Kumasi working on putting things in place.

We have spoken to the security apparatus to provide us with top-quality security, and here I am talking about joint police and military so that we will be able to get the atmosphere we are looking for.”
