AFCON 2023: It Was Verbal, Not Physical – GFA Clarifies Attack On Chris Hughton After Loss To Cape Verde

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has clarified that Black Stars coach, Chris Hughton, faced verbal criticism rather than a physical attack after their opening defeat against Cape Verde in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

After the Black Stars’ 2–1 defeat to Cape Verde on Sunday night, reports circulated that some fans had attacked Hughton. It was initially reported that diplomats intervened to defuse the situation, and an unidentified fan had been taken into police custody.

However, the GFA has refuted claims of a physical confrontation, stating that the alleged incident was exaggerated and blown out of proportion.

“The fan only expressed his displeasure over the outcome of the result and told the coach to leave the job,” explained an official from the FA to Citi Sports. He further emphasized, “There was no physical confrontation, and certainly, no arrest was made.”
