After Serving 2 Years in Prison in Sweden, Joseph Amoako Finally Released Over Wrong Accusation of Rape

Joseph Amoako, a former forward for Asante Kotoko, who was wrongfully convicted of rape and had been serving a two-year prison term in Sweden has been freed according to a new report by Ghanasoccernet.

Amoako’s agent, Derrick D Thompson, verified the news of his client’s release on March 8, 2023.

Amoako was punished by the Helsingborg district court after being found guilty of raping a 16-year-old Swedish girl in December 2022. The court found that Amoako had done so without the girl’s permission.

Due to this, the Helsingborgs IF football team suspended him in October 2022, and his contract was terminated when he was arrested on suspicion of rape.

Initially, two Helsingborgs IF players from Africa were being looked into, but after interrogation, one of them was let go, leaving Amoako as the lone suspect, who was then given a sentence. Amoako was eventually freed after it was learned that the girl had made up the incident in response to pleas.

“They just released him yesterday from the prison after the appeal was made. The case was fake, the girl was lying. Upon appeal, Amoako has been released. It was all a fake story from the girl so he is now a free man,” Derrick D Thompson told Ghanasoccernet.

Amoako, his family, and his supporters, who had been anxiously anticipating his release, have expressed their relief at the news. The football player is anticipated to shortly return to Ghana, where he will continue his sporting career.
