Akufo-Addo Intervenes To Prevent Eight Chiana SHS Students From Being Expelled For ‘Insulting’ Him

President Akufo-Addo has intervened on behalf of the eight students of the Chiana Senior High School who have been expelled for allegedly disrespecting the president.

A statement from the Ministry of Education says the Minister of Education has ordered the Ghana Education Service to consider an alternative disciplinary action.

“Consequently, the Minister for Education, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, has directed the Ghana Education Service to consider an alternative disciplinary instead of dismissal.”

The statement was signed by the Ministry’s Spokesperson, Kwasi Kwarteng.

In a viral video posted on social media in November 2022, the eight students were heard making various insulting remarks about the president and the Free SHS policy.

The Ghana Education Service issued a statement on January 11, 2022, confirming that they had approved the recommendation to dismiss the eight students because their behavior “was regarded very unacceptable and antithetical to the acceptable norms of conduct normally required of any student in our Educational system in Ghana.”

The students have asked for forgiveness, saying they were influenced by social media trends and did not mean what they said about the President.

Their plea came after the minority side in Parliament described the punishment as harsh and a threat to their education. The minority thus called for a review of the punishment.
