Alban Bagbin Officially “Sacks” The EC And NIA Due To The Absence Of Jean Mensah In Parliament

In light of Electoral Commission chairwoman Mrs. Jean Mensah Adukwei’s absence, Parliament sacked many members of the EC and the National Identification Authority yesterday night.

Legislators asked the EC and NIA to give them a briefing because of a new constitutional instrument that would let people register to vote with just a Ghana card. The constitutional instrument also wants to stop the guarantor scheme and only let people register continuously at EC district offices.

At the next meeting of the committee with officials from the commission and the National Identification Authority, Speaker Alban S.K. Bagbin asked that the chairperson, Jean Mensah, come to the briefing and represent the body at the highest level possible (NIA).

On Thursday, the special budget committee, after consulting with the EC on the Public Elections Registration of Voters Regulations, 2022, suggested that the EC and NIA brief the committee as a whole..

Yesterday’s meeting was led by Dr. Bossman Asare, who is the deputy commissioner of the EC, and Prof. Ken Attafuah, who is the CEO of the NIA.

Minority members of parliament were angry and started asking questions about the EC chief’s absence. They said she was disrespecting the house by not being there.

The fact that Jean Mensah was also involved in other things did not convince the people in parliament. Eventually, after some heated debate, it was decided that the briefing would have to wait until the EC chief could make it.
