Dr Anthony Yaw Baah, the Secretary General of the Trade Union Congress, has backed Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, the Member of Parliament (MP) for the Volta Region’s North Tongu District of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), in his opposition to the building of the National Cathedral.
It was revealed at a meeting called “Ghana’s Day of Shame,” which was held on February 24, 2023, and was put on by the Socialist Movement of Ghana Many prominent figures from Ghanaian politics attended the event, including former NPP Chairman Paul Afoko, founding NPP member Dr Nyhaho Nyaho Tamakloe, former CPP flagbearer Dr Abu Sakara, and some members of the diplomatic mission to Ghana, including Cuba’s Ambassador to Ghana, Algeria’s ambassador, China’s ambassador, and Namibia’s ambassador.
The General Secretary of the TUC spoke to the crowd and reiterated the union’s opposition to the building of the National Cathedral.
He also urged Mr Ablakwa to use every effort to transform the cathedral’s construction into a hospital if the NDC wins the election.
“We don’t need to use state resources to build a cathedral. What saddens my heart was that when TUC started the campaign against the construction of the cathedral nobody minded.
“We will back our brother here to change the plan of building a cathedral when in fact we don’t need a cathedral.
“We need hospitals and schools, we don’t need a cathedral,” he stated
