Following the release of the group’s debut studio album, “Funky Town,” the lead singer Karun and the lead rapper Taio departed the group to pursue higher education and solo careers, respectively. The four founding members of The Wave announced their reunion at a September 2017 concert at the Waterfront, Ng’ong racecourse, but disbanded shortly thereafter.

After releasing a number of experimental projects, manager Mykie Tooni, rappers Shappaman (then known as Young Kass) and Taio (then known as Taio Tripper), and singers Karun (then Miss Karun) and Kus Ma (then K’Cous) co-founded the group in the middle of 2009. Initially disseminating their music for digital download via ReverbNation, SoundCloud, and SoundClick, their song “Low” was the first to receive radio airplay, having been introduced by radio host Eve D’Souza on Capital FM when it debuted on the radio in 2009.

“Party Don’t Stop” peaked at number 2 on Capital FM’s “Hits Not Homework” playlist and number 13 on Homeboyz Radio’s “HitList” on August 31, 2010, to largely favourable critical reception. This and subsequent tracks earned them several awards, including “Teeniez’ Group or Collabo” and “Teeniez’ Nu Artist” at the 20 April 2012 Chaguo La Teeniez Awards.

Camp Mulla made their public debut on February 12, 2011, at Collo’s Valentine’s Day concert, where they debuted the music video for their new single “Chini ya Maji.” They then served as the opening act for Nigerian R&B duo P-Square at The Carnivore on 26 February 2011, and for Nigerian acts such as Naeto C and Flavour at Naija 9te (or Naija Nite) in October 2011.

On May 6, 2012, the group was scheduled to perform alongside J. Cole, Davido, Aemo E’Face, P-Square, Naeto C, and Flavour at the Big Brother Africa 7 opening ceremony. However, they were unable to attend due to complications in their travel documents.

On 13 May 2012, however, they performed on the program’s first eviction performance. 2012 also saw Camp Mulla perform at the conclusion of the fifth season of Tusker Project Fame.

Camp Mulla was nominated for Best International Act (Africa) at the 2012 BET Awards alongside Lira, Mokobé, and Ice Prince, becoming the first Kenyans ever to be nominated for a BET award, but lost out to eventual winners Sarkodie and Wizkid. The group released their debut studio album, Funky Town, on September 29, 2012.

Sub Sahara announced in May 2013 that lead vocalist Karun was leaving to pursue a solo career and further studies in the United States, and that rapper Thee MC Africa was also leaving to pursue a solo career. Tiri Murai (also known as Tiri), a Kenyan vocalist and the girlfriend of Kus Ma, was brought in to replace Karun in June 2013 after performing with the group at the MTV Africa All Stars concert in Durban, South Africa the previous month.

On 22 August 2013, Kus Ma released a mixtape titled J’s and Purple, and on 8 March 2014, Tiri released her own mixtape titled Nefertiri.[21] Shappaman released the extended play Wild Life on Tape on April 20, 2015, coinciding with the 4/20 celebrations.On 2 March 2016, he followed up with a mixtape titled Love Wild.

On September 10, 2017, Camp Mulla announced their return from hiatus with a performance at The Wave at the Ngong Racecourse in Nairobi, featuring t.The group is rumoured to be preparing to release their second studio album, with an unconfirmed release date.
