The Bank of Ghana has reportedly warned the public to stop gifting people cedi banknote bouquets and hampers, according to a Graphic Online report.
The money was created, according to the claim, to be used as a means of payment for the acquisition of goods and services.
Today (March 30, 2023) Dominic Owusu, the head of the central bank’s currency section, warned journalists that any further uses of the currency were forbidden and would result in legal action.
He said the bank had noticed that cedi notes were being used as bouquets and present baskets for weddings, birthdays, and other festivities.
In addition to being incorrect, he asserted that this behaviour made it easier for the notes to degrade or be changed. He asserted that such acts affected the central bank’s operations because it costs money to replace damaged and worn-out notes.
Graphic also stated that Mr Owusu was speaking to journalists about methods to protect the currency as part of the celebrations for Ghana Month in March. He believes that local currency is a potent symbol of the country and that upholding its impeccable standards should be everyone’s top priority.
