Christian Atsu Not Found, Club Says It Was A Case Of Mistaken Identity

On February 6, 2023, there was an earthquake that killed almost 4,300 people and injured 15,000 others. It was previously reported that Atsu had been found alive in the wreckage after plunging from the ninth floor of the apartment building in Kahramanmaras.

Turkish media reported Atsu’s rescue 26 hours after the original earthquake struck Turkey. According to Joy Sports, a Turkish journalist named Yagiz Sabuncuoglu told them that Christian Atsu’s condition is being closely watched at the moment.

“It’s good news, but we’re following his condition because, when someone is rescued from under rubble, it means he hasn’t eaten or drunk anything.

“So the person’s condition is very important after the rescue.” That’s why we’re following up with the hospital.

A day after the rescue was reported, however, the winger was still nowhere to be located. Nana Sekyere, his agent, told Joy Sports he had been unable to locate his client despite extensive searching.

“No club official or hospital staff have been able to confirm his presence in any hospital in Hatya or a neighboring country; we are still searching for him, so we are very concerned. It’s 24 hours since it was reported he’s alive, however, he has not been seen in any hospital.

“I am speaking to everybody; I am in direct contact with everybody at Hatayspor, I am also in contact with the Ghanaian and British consulates in Turkey and the Turkish football association.”

Francisca Ashietey-Odunton, the Ghanaian ambassador in Turkey, told Joy Sports that she and her organization have no idea where the 31-year-old is.

It has now been reported that the information of Atsu being found is a hoax.

Hatayspor Board Member Mustafa Özat said, “I received information that Christian Atsu was rescued from the rubble, but it was NOT true.” “I gave the same information to the press, but at the moment, the information received is that Atsu and Taner Savut are under the rubble.”

There hasn’t been any word from the player. His last post on Twitter was made on February 5, after Hatayspor clashed with Kasimpasa SK.

The 31-year-old Black Stars winger signed a one-year contract to play for the Turkish team in September 2022 after spending time in Saudi Arabia.
