The Dalai Lama, the most revered spiritual figure in Tibet, issued an official apology after receiving criticism for appearing in a video instructing a little child to “suck his tongue.”
The February event took place at the Dalali Lama’s Temple in India’s northern region. The small kid can be heard asking for a hug in the viral video that has surfaced again, but the 87-year-old Nobel Peace Prize recipient first offers him a kiss before giving him a hug. He then extends his tongue and says, “And suck my tongue,” after a brief pause.
It said the Dalai Lama, “wishes to apologize to the boy and his family, as well as his many friends across the world, for the hurt his words may have caused,” adding he was sorry “for the hurt his words may have caused” the boy and his familu.
“His Holiness often teases people he meets in an innocent and playful way, even in public and before cameras,” the statement pointed out.
According to Tibetian tradition, it is an acceptable custom to poke out one’s tongue as a style of greeting and respect. Nonetheless, he has since expressed great remorse following the incident.
