EC Appointment: “What’s Wrong With Akufo-Addo Choosing NPP Members?” Obiri Boahen Asks

Former NPP Deputy General Secretary Nana Obiri Boahen has disproved claims that President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo acted improperly by appointing only members of the NPP party as commissioners of the Electoral Commission of Ghana.

In his view, Akufo-Addo has done nothing unlawful because the 1992 Ghanaian constitution makes no provision against the president appointing members of his political party to the EC.

During an interview on Neat FM on March 22, 2023, Obiri Boahen said that the constitution requires the president to appoint competent people to government positions regardless of their party affiliation.

“The president’s actions are in line with the constitution. Members of the NDC claim that the new commissioners hold NPP membership cards. Even if it is true, read the Constitution to see if there is a disqualification based on party cards.

“What’s wrong with them being NPP members? The constitution merely grants the president the authority to appoint; it does not include the provision of disqualifying members of specific political parties, he stated.

He stated that the NDC should stop complaining about the EC and instead work on ensuring that they can properly compile election results.

Three new members of the Election Commission of Ghana were sworn in by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo on Monday, March 20, 2023, at the Jubilee House.

Dr. Peter Appiahene, Hajia Salima Ahmed Tijani, and Reverend Akua Ofori Boateng, the three new EC members, will take the place of those who just retired. They are scheduled to serve in office until the end of the 2024 elections.
