ECG Clarifies Video Clip Of MD Blasting Ghanaians Over Dumsor

The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) management has issued a statement urging the public to disregard a video in which the Managing Director is heard making insensitive comments regarding power outages and the concerns of customers.

The ECG clarified that the video is an extract from an interview conducted over a year ago and has been taken out of context.

In the statement released on March 16, the power company emphasized that the interview took place during a period of conflict between ECG staff and customers in Manya Krobo, where staff members were assaulted for requesting bill payments.

See below for the full statement:

Our attention has been drawn to a clip of our Managing Director, Mr. Samuel Dubik Mahama Esq., making the rounds on social media which seems to insinuate an insensitivity to the difficult situation our cherished customers are facing as a result of the current unstable power supply.

ECG wishes to state categorically that the video is an extract of an interview which was granted over a year and half ago, during the ECG/Manya Krobo impasse, where amongst other things, our staff were assaulted for requesting payment of bills from customers.

We deeply regret the misunderstanding created by the resurfacing of this extract, which has been grossly taken out of context. ECG understands the plight of our cherished customers and the public amidst the current challenges, and wishes to assure that the sentiment expressed in the video DOES NOT reflect the values and commitment of our MD and ECG to providing reliable electricity services.

We are currently collaborating with key industry players on the value chain to address the critical issues for a lasting solution.

As the nation’s foremost electricity distributor, we recognize the critical importance of electricity as a basic necessity for daily life and for our socio-economic development. To transform ECG into a modern utility company, to meet the growing electricity demand and the expectations of our customers, we have undertaken various initiatives to enhance our operations and customer experience.

As part of our digital transformation agenda and our quest to provide our customers with more efficient and hussle-free customer service, we continue to improve on the ECG PowerApp, which serves as the primary digital platform for transacting all ECG businesses.

We are working diligently to improve our revenue inflows and reduce our losses to enable us meet our financial obligations to our suppliers and invest in the distribution network to ensure a more stable and reliable power supply.

We express our profound gratitude for the continued support and understanding of our customers as we build a brighter and more sustainable future together.
