ECG Boss Claims Several People Have Called Him To Stop The Disconnection Exercise

The Electricity Company of Ghana’s managing director claimed that he has received requests to stop the power cutoffs being carried out to collect outstanding bills.

Samuel Dubik Mahama claims that the people calling him are friends, influential people, and politicians. He revealed this information during Tuesday’s edition of JoyNews’ PM Express.

The electricity company began its major disconnection operation on Monday to try to recover GH5.7 billion in debt. Customers who were behind on payments were warned by ECG with having their power cut off.

Because of its $1 billion debt to Independent Power Producers (IPP), the company has declared a revenue mobilization effort to raise money in order to avoid shutting down.

“How do we pay the Independent Power Producers? How do we pay GRIDCo? How do we pay VRA? It is a shared responsibility.

“Please let’s just do the right thing because I don’t even have the moral right after sending somebody out of the office to pick up the phone and call him and say ‘hello, can you cut X, Y and Z slack? No’ then what is the moral of the exercise?” he questioned.

However, the ECG boss insists that the organization’s continual effort to raise revenues is not driven by political considerations. Concerns that the drill is aimed at the supporters of one political party are groundless, according. He was clear that he would not politicize his position.

“I don’t see myself as doing politics, I see myself now as a technocrat. The biggest mistake we could ever do is to politicise the work done by this office.

“So for me, your electricity bill doesn’t have a party colour…your electricity bill is red, gold, and green with a black star in the middle, that’s your electricity bill. So believe me, as I said, the status quo balances straight out,” he added.
