A group of people residing in Effutu in the Central region, have taken to the streets to express their dissatisfaction regarding allegations of a potential sale of the Ramsar site in Winneba to investors for mining purposes.
These concerned residents, dressed in red attire, emphasize that the site in question is the very same location where they engage in deer hunting for the annual Aboakyire festival. They further assert that the sale of this land could jeopardize the continuity of the Aboakyer festival.
This demonstration occurred several months after the discovery of significant lithium deposits in Effutu and other areas of the Central Region, which was presented to Parliament.
The residents have issued a warning, stating their intention to impede the mining company’s operations, as they believe the exploration activities would result in the destruction of a reserve that has existed for numerous years.
A social media user emphasized the situation by stating that Hon. Alexander Afenyo Markin and his NPP party have effectively sold the Ramsar Site to a mining company. The Ramsar site is where the Effutu people hunt deer for the Aboakyer Festival. It seems that the NPP is truly aiming to boost tourism. The protest is currently ongoing.
The tweet stated:
Hon. Alexander Afenyo Markin and his party has successfully sold the Ramsar Site to a mineral company. Ramsar site is where the people of Effutu hunt their deers🦌 for the Aboakyer Festival. They (NPP) want to promote tourism indeed. The demonstration is still ongoing.
