Fire Guts Home of Prof Ameyaw Akumfi- Report

According to a report from MyNewsGH, a devastating fire broke out at the residence of Professor Christopher Ameyaw Akumfi, the Board Chairman of the Public Procurement Authority (PPA), in Techiman, Bono East Region.

The estimated value of the properties destroyed in the fire amounts to several hundreds of thousands of Ghana Cedis. The incident took place on Saturday, December 9, 2023, and unfortunately, Prof. Akumfi’s daughter, who was in her 30s, was the only person present at home during the time of the incident. Tragically, she sustained severe burn injuries as a result.

It is worth noting that Prof. Akumfi, who previously served as the Education Minister under the John Kufuor administration, was not present at home during the incident as he was attending a funeral.

Preliminary investigations suggest that an explosion occurred in one of the rooms, leading to the release of thick smoke. Unfortunately, before the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) officials could be alerted and intervene, the entire building was engulfed in flames.

In her attempt to escape the inferno, Prof. Ameyaw Akumfi’s daughter suffered severe burn injuries and was immediately rushed to the Holy Family Hospital in Techiman for medical attention.

“No a single property was saved from the house. Onlookers only managed to push one of the vehicles to safety but the whole building has been reduced to ashes”, an aide to the PPA Board Chairman told MyNewsGh.com.

He states that the origin of the fire is not immediately identifiable, however, he has not dismissed the potential of a power surge.
