Former captain of the Black Stars, Emmanuel Awuley Quaye has sadly passed away. Quaye represented Ghana in the 1970s and led the Black Stars to victory in the 1978 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
He was a well-known figure in the Ghana Premier League, notably playing for Accra Great Olympics. The Professional Footballers Association of Ghana (PFAG) has honoured the memory of Quaye, with their general secretary Anthony Baffoe offering a tribute.
“Emanuel Awuley Quaye, captain of the 1978 Black Stars Squad, has passed away. My sympathies and condolences to the entire family. May your soul rest in perfect peace,” Baffoe wrote on X (formerly Twitter).
During their 47th awards ceremony in 2023, the Sports Writers Association of Ghana (SWAG) paid tribute to Quaye, acknowledging his significant contributions to football. Quaye, upon receiving this prestigious accolade, took a moment to reflect on the sacrifices he and his fellow players made during their playing days.
He expressed his disappointment regarding the unfulfilled promises that were made after their third African Cup victory. Quaye, a legendary figure for Ghanaian club Great Olympics, played a crucial role in the team’s domestic triumphs throughout the 1970s.
His impact extended beyond the football field, as he was the father of former Ghana U-17 star Awuley Quaye Jnr, who gained fame by winning the U-17 World Cup in 1997, as well as Lawrence Awuley Quaye.
