Ghana Airports Company Denies Charging US$7 Luggage Fumigation Fee

The Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL) has denied rumours that it will begin charging US$7 from departing and arriving passengers to cover the cost of luggage fumigation.

“The attention of the Board and Management of the Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL) has been drawn to several media reports of a proposed tax or charge of $7 the GACL intends imposing on passengers for the purpose of fumigating luggage.

“GACL wishes to assure the general public that GACL will not impose any such taxes or charges on passengers for luggage fumigation purposes as reported. All reports to the contrary should therefore be disregarded,” the GACL stated in a statement.

As reported by some media outlets, the GACL informed airlines using Kotoka International Airport (KIA) of the $7 fumigation fee during a meeting on Thursday, June 22, 2023, in Accra.

The GACL’s administration, however, quickly responded with a press release on Monday (June 26, 2023) in which they denied any involvement in a decision to impose luggage taxes or fees on tickets for international travellers.

In addition, Asaase Radio stated that their sources inside the office of the president also denied the existence of any such tax or levy. “In Ghana, it is not possible to introduce such a levy or tax without going through Parliament for approval.”

When Asaase News inquired with two additional GACL board members, they both confirmed that no such proposal had been brought before the board.
