Ghanaian Artistes Are As Greedy As Our Politicians –  Soulman

Radio and television personality, Nana Kwame Osei Sarpong, popularly known as Nockus or Da Soulman has accused Ghanaian musicians of being selfish.

Drawing a comparison between artistes and political officeholders, Soulman who was speaking on the Friday, 22 December 2023, edition of YFM’s The DrYve said Ghanaian musicians are more fixated on being at the receiving end instead of putting others in the entertainment industry on.

“Our artistes have taken everything; they are like our politicians; all they do is take. They like the taking part, they forget that it is an eco-system. What day has any artiste sat to think how are our dancers doing? How are our makeup artistes doing? Our stylists, how are they doing? Are they going forward? Our video directors. All the artistes think about is they; that benefits them,” he said

He cited dancehall artiste, Stonebwoy as an example noting that the BHIM Nation president was concerned about empowering industry colleagues when he was underground but changed when he went mainstream.

“Stonebwoy at the time that he was coming up, those times that he was shooting the Not Again videos in 2013, we were in SA (South Africa) and I was in conversation with him and I was saying that why doesn’t Sarkodie now that he has the BET and all that do shows, maybe go to SA and line all of you up, Efya, and show that I am not alone. I am not the only one who deserves BET we also have Efya, we also have Samini and others.

“He agreed with me. He was like that’s a great idea. When he became big who has he featured? The first thing he did was to get rid of his own boy I Judah who sounded like him. That’s Ghanaians for you” he stated.

A recent campaign to increase local content within the music space has generated a public discourse on the future of the entertainment industry in Ghana.

The campaign dubbed Play Ghana which is being spearheaded by the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture in collaboration with some musicians seeks to advocate for 90% Ghanaian songs to be played in the media and at public functions.

But according to some critics the challenges in the Ghanaian entertainment industry are deep-rooted beyond the Play Ghana campaign.
