Government Grants GETFund Scholarships To 4,279 Tertiary Students

The government of Ghana has provided scholarships to 4,279 students attending Ghanaian universities and colleges through the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund).

The recipients are studying various undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. When compared to the 2022 total of 2,704 awardees, the number of successful applications this year is up 63%.

Per the breakdown provided by GETFund, 2,951 beneficiaries are enrolled in diploma and degree programmes and 1,328 beneficiaries are on master’s and PhD programmes in private and government institutions of higher education in Ghana.

In addition, 1,963 recipients, or 46%, are enrolled in some sort of STEM-related programme (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics). However, 54% of the recipients are pursuing degrees in Humanities-related fields.

As of Tuesday, August 2, 2023, the Fund had deposited the total amount of GH 25,278,029.39 allocated to recipients’ fees into the accounts of their institutions.

GETFund released an open call for local scholarship applications in December 2022, encouraging interested individuals to submit their applications through the website they had set up specifically for this purpose.

About 22,000 people filled out the application and submitted it. The Fund’s Board of Trustees received so many applications for the scholarships that they decided to expand the maximum number of winners to 4,279.

As of Tuesday, August 2, 2023, about 300 successful applicants had still not accepted the grant offers sent to their email addresses. However, attempts to get in touch with them have been made. As a result, the Fund is unable to move forward with their paperwork.
