Background

The legal dispute between former Black Stars captain Asamoah Gyan, and his former wife, Gifty Gyan, regarding their properties has been resolved by the Accra High Court. As a result, their marriage has been officially annulled, following a petition by Asamoah Gyan to the court. According to the court’s ruling, Gifty Gyan is now entitled to several assets.

These include a house located in the United Kingdom, a 4-bedroom house in Accra’s Spintex area, a gas station, and two vehicles. Presided over by Hafisata Ameleboba JA, the court determined that Gifty Gyan should receive a portion of Asamoah Gyan’s property due to her significant contributions.

The court acknowledged that Gifty had made substantial contributions towards the acquisition of these properties. This was evident through her sole responsibility for the children’s care and her continuous presence with them while Asamoah Gyan pursued his professional career.

Consequently, the court granted her the aforementioned assets, which include a UK property, a gas station in Prampram, a 4-bedroom house in Spintex (which had been purchased for her prior to their marriage in 2013), and two cars. Furthermore, the court ordered Asamoah Gyan to pay a monthly maintenance fee of GH¢25,000 to Gifty Gyan. However, the court declined her request for alimony. Asamoah Gyan, a renowned Ghanaian football legend, initiated the divorce proceedings at the High Court. He also disputed being the biological father of their three children, leading to his demand for a DNA test.

The DNA test conducted confirmed that all of the children were biologically related to Asamoah Gyan. The court ruled that despite Gifty’s paper marriage at the age of 17, the marriage between her and Asamoah Gyan in 2013 was valid and subsisting.

However, a decree of nullity was issued, annulling the marriage. The court acknowledged that the couple had been in a romantic relationship since 2003 and had two children before formalizing their union. In terms of Gifty’s contribution to Asamoah Gyan’s property, the court granted her a share due to her significant contributions to caring for their children and managing the household. This included a UK property, a gas station in Prampram, a four-bedroom house in Spintex, and two cars.
