Asamoah Gyan Lays Into ‘Selfish’ Black Meteors Players After AFCON Exit

Ghana’s all-time leading goalscorer, Asamoah Gyan swiftly reacted to the shocking exit of the Black Meteors from the CAF U23 Nations Cup in Morocco on Friday, 30 June 2023.

Gyan identified the main problem of the team and singled it out for criticism in a post he shared on Twitter that has since elicited a plethora of responses from Ghanaian soccer fans.

The playing group, which had some influential players like Fatawu Ishahaku and Nordsjaelland golden boy Ernest Nuamah, was slammed by Gyan after the team drew 1-1 with Guinea in their last group game which was not enough to make them advance to the next phase of the competition.

Gyan stated that most of the players in the team were selfish and played as though nothing was at stake as most of them thought they were bigger than the team. He shared thus;

”What I saw in this Black Meteors team is some players think they are bigger than the whole team. Small hype and fame? SHM,” the former Sunderland and Al Ain star man posted on his Twitter page.

He added: ”Modern football is not about only what you do with the ball. It’s about what you do without the ball. I see players thinking they can play alone. It’s about time we wake up and defend when we lose the ball. SMH.”
