How Ghanaian Journalist Secured Scholarship For Charcoal Seller’s Daughter

A compassionate gesture by broadcast journalist Umaru Sanda Amadu of Citi FM has resulted in a young girl being awarded a prestigious full scholarship to study at Ghana International School (GIS), one of the most esteemed and expensive educational institutions in Ghana.

Umaru Sanda had previously conducted an interview with Jennifer, the recipient of the scholarship and daughter of a charcoal seller in La, Accra. It was through this exposure that she was able to secure a scholarship to Soul Clinic International School, which she successfully completed and now aspires to pursue A-levels.

Following the interview, the CEO of Ghana International School, Dr. Mary Ashun, was deeply moved by Jennifer’s story and took immediate action as if she were her own daughter.

With the assistance of her team, Jennifer was granted a full scholarship and provided with accommodation to attend GIS. Amadu shared this exciting news on Facebook, eliciting a range of emotions from netizens for obvious reasons.

His full post reads;

*The Charcoal Seller’s Daughter goes to GIS* I told you how a Citi TV interview I did with Jennifer, the daughter of Charcoal seller at La in Accra landed her a scholarship to Soul Clinic International School which she completed successfully and needed to do A Levels.

The CEO of Ghana International School, Dr Mary Ashun saw the appeal and swung into action as though it was her own daughter. With the support of her team, Jennifer was given full scholarship and accommodation to go to GIS. Yesterday, as I delivered Jennifer to the GIS Apartment manager where she will stay with other boarders for the next 2 years, I felt an unexplainable satisfaction. It reminded of how my mother delivered me to the House Master of Tema Secondary School 2 decades ago.

The same tears that filled my mum’s eyes that day filled mine but I cleaned mine quickly so I don’t infect Jennifer’s mother who was expressing unreadable emotions as we went through the admission process. God bless everyone who helped shape Jennifer’s future; from the public school in La to Soul Clinic to GIS.

Special thanks to Dr John Kpikpi of New Nation International School who also gave scholarship to Jennifer when I went there to appeal. A special thanks to: the gentleman who put Jennifer on a monthly allowance, the lady in Ashaley Botwe who offered her guest house to accommodate Jennifer if she were to attend New Nation, the NCUK School which offered partial scholarship to Jennifer, Mrs McCauley of Soul Clinic who was willing to pay for Jennifer to continue elsewhere if no School offered scholarship when she finished, and to those who simply shared my post with someone who can help. I feel really positive about this and I know in a few years, we will all celebrate.
