‘I Cried Every Time I Finished Cooking’- Adom TV’s Maame Akua Opens Up On Abusive Marriage

Ace TV presenter and talk show host Maame Akua Oforiwaa Ampadu Austin has shared her personal account of her challenging marriage and her subsequent life as a widow.

Maame Akua remembered how she met her husband and the abuse she experienced from him after they got married.

According to her, she first met her husband many years ago when shopping at her mother’s Tema grocery store. But after a few years, what she had anticipated would be a happy marriage came to an end because of unbridgeable divisions, with abuse at its core.

Maame Akua said in an interview with Mike 2 on Adom FM’s Entertainment Hall that she wed at the age of 18 and that while her husband’s family was very hospitable, he also showed a negative side of himself.

“I married immediately I completed school. I was very calm. My in-laws were very good to me. My first opportunity to travel to the United Kingdom came from his family… I cannot mention my marriage without them and I can never be ungrateful to them.”

Beyond the love her in-laws showered her, she said her husband tormented her physically and emotionally to the point she always wanted a gateway to exit.

“Every time I finish cooking, I cry for about 15 to 20 minutes before I can even eat. I travelled back home to Ghana and he still followed me here. It’s a very long story, but when you are in a relationship that is abusive, you are always looking for an opportunity to exit. My marriage was like pear shape; one minute it is straight and the next it is curved”.

It took her a period of four years to muster the courage to communicate her decision to terminate her marriage after having three children. She expressed a sense of relief upon making this decision, however, her spouse harbored resentment and severed ties with her for an extended period of time.

Nevertheless, they were able to rekindle their friendship through co-parenting and maintained communication until his demise two years ago, following a prolonged illness.

Reflecting on her life as a widow, Maame Akua stated that she has been living a peaceful existence after fulfilling all necessary customs and traditions. She disclosed that she is presently unattached and has no intentions of entering into another relationship. If she were to remarry, it would be solely for companionship.
