On Thursday, Parliament witnessed a day of high drama. As the day progressed, tensions rose as the report on President Akufo-Addo’s new ministerial appointees was up for approval.
Alban Bagbin, the Speaker of Parliament, made a comment about cutting a lawmaker’s hand, which brought laughter to the chamber.
During the discussion, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, who is the Effutu MP and Deputy Majority Leader, led the campaign to accept the proposed ministers. Bagbin was making a reference to the behaviour of Alexander Afenyo-Markin, who frequently displays his disapproval by seemingly flinging his hand in the air during discussions.
His habit of making erratic hand motions when disputing on the floor looked to have gotten under the Speaker’s skin. He said
“Deputy Majority Leader, one day I will give a directive that this your hand that you’ve been swinging, it be cut off.”
Mr. Afenyo-Markin threw his hands in the air when Minority Chief Whip Kwame Governs Agbodza defended his party’s decision to reject the new appointees. The minority hasn’t changed its mind about rejecting the new ministry appointments.
The rejection is an attempt by the minority to reduce the size of the government. But, the Speaker of the House postponed the vote until today.
