The Eastern Regional Coordinating Council (ERCC) has arranged a pre-launch ceremony for the upcoming 67th National Independence Day anniversary celebration in Koforidua, the capital.
This year, the Eastern Region has been selected to host the national anniversary, which will be held on March 6 at the Youth Resource Center (Koforidua Sports Stadium). The official launch of the anniversary is scheduled for February 15, 2024.
During the ceremony, Lord Commey, Director of Operations at the Presidency, highlighted that in the past, the Independence Day anniversary was only celebrated in the Greater Accra Region. However, in 2017, it was decided to rotate the event and host it in different regions to stimulate the local economy.
President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has been implementing this rotation during his presidency, and this year, it is the Eastern Region’s turn to host the celebration. The planning committee for the anniversary includes various institutions, such as the Ghana Armed Forces, the State Protocol Department, and the Bureau of National Investigation.
The local organizing committee of the Eastern Region will provide support to the planning committee. Dr. Commey mentioned that the committee aims to inform the public about the anniversary’s details, including the guest of honour and the diplomatic corps, during the official launch in February.
Mr Seth Kwame Acheampong, the Eastern Regional Minister, stressed the need for collaboration between institutions to ensure a well-planned anniversary.
He emphasized that this event is an opportunity to showcase the region’s rich cultural heritage, including 11 paramountcies. Ghana’s Independence Day is celebrated every year on March 6th. On this historic day in 1957, Dr Kwame Nkrumah, Ghana’s Prime Minister, proudly declared the nation’s freedom from British Colonial rule.
