John Mahama To Name Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang As Running Mate—Report

As per a publication by Asaase Radio, John Dramani Mahama is set to announce Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang as his running mate for the upcoming presidential election on December 7, 2024.

According to Asaase Radio’s findings, Mahama intends to publicly declare Naana as his preferred partner very soon, aiming to form an alliance that can effectively challenge the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and prevent them from securing a third consecutive term in power.

By selecting Opoku-Agyemang once again as his running mate, Mahama and the NDC have chosen to maintain their tradition of selecting a vice presidential candidate from the Central Region, a practice they have followed since 2012.

In the lead-up to the 2020 elections, Mahama made the historic decision to choose Professor Opoku-Agyemang as his running mate, marking the first time the NDC had ever selected a woman for this role. The National Executive Committee of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) fully supported and endorsed the nomination of Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang as John Dramani Mahama’s running mate.

Following the endorsement, Mr Mahama took to Twitter to express his admiration for Naana Jane, describing her as a God-fearing individual, a distinguished scholar, a dedicated public servant, and a role model.

Before her nomination, Professor Opoku-Agyemang served as the Minister for Education from 2013 to 2017 and held the position of Vice-Chancellor at the University of Cape Coast, making her the first-ever female to hold this prestigious role.

With a PhD in English literature and groundbreaking research in the humanities, she brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise to the NDC 2020 campaign. Born in Cape Coast in 1951, Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang spent her formative years in Komenda, Accra, and Cape Coast. She attended Aburi Girls High School and Wesley Girls High School before pursuing a bachelor’s degree in English at the University of Cape Coast.

She then furthered her studies in Canada at York University, where she obtained her PhD in English literature. After completing her doctoral studies, she returned to Ghana with her family and settled in Cape Coast.

For over three decades, she dedicated herself to teaching at the University of Cape Coast, holding various positions such as Hall Warden for Adehye Hall, Head of the Department of English, Dean of the Faculty of Arts, and Founding Dean of the School of Graduate Studies.

Throughout her career, she has been a source of inspiration and guidance to countless students, who attest to her compassion, intelligence, genuine concern for their well-being, and unwavering integrity.
