Kumasi: Fake Doctor At KATH Busted

An unidentified man has been busted at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital for posing as a doctor and briskly going about his ‘business’ like a medical doctor.

The man was heckled and interrogated by his captors, as seen in a video shared by the official Facebook page of Graphic Online. The man had no answer to the questions hurled at him by those who found his actions suspicious and consequently nabbed him. The security men at the hospital were called to the scene, and as shown by the footage, they held him tightly to prevent any ‘plan B’ from him.

The man was dressed like a doctor and had a stethoscope hanging from his shoulders. Some nurses and other doctors could be heard saying he is a fraudster and has to be dealt with severely. A voice could be heard saying he could be a sakawa man who was there to look for victims for his bloody sacrifices.

This is not the first instance of such an incident occurring. In 2012, a 23-year-old Senior High School (SHS) graduate, who had been masquerading as a medical doctor and attending to patients at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) in Kumasi, was apprehended. On Thursday afternoon, Romeo Osei Tutu was caught attempting to administer medication to a patient on admission at the Accident and Emergency department of the hospital.

Osei Tutu had been posing as a medical doctor at the facility for the past three years. He was taken into custody after he failed to answer questions posed to him by a female doctor at the children’s ward. The incident began when the former Osei Tutu SHS student, dressed as a doctor with his stethoscope, entered the ward and approached a sick young boy on his bed, ostensibly to provide medical attention.

As the young boy had been attended to by a female doctor since his admission, his mother became suspicious and asked the suspect why he was attending to her son this time around. The fake doctor, known at the facility as ‘Junior,’ claimed that he had been asked to stand in for the female doctor since she did not come to work that day. As the fake doctor was going through the young boy’s folder, the female doctor appeared at the scene.

The female doctor, whose name was not disclosed by the authorities, confronted Osei Tutu, asking him basic questions about the medical profession, and he was found fumbling in his response. The doctor alerted the security personnel, who quickly arrived and arrested Osei Tutu. During interrogation, Osei Tutu admitted that he had been posing as a doctor at the hospital for the past three years because he was deeply interested in the job.

The Bantama resident stated that he used to work as a health insurance agent who went around registering people with the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS).

He revealed that he had been moving from one ward to the other, posing as a medical doctor assigned to treat patients on their sick beds. Workers at the pharmacy department of the center, who claimed to know Osei Tutu, noted that he often came to buy drugs for patients he had treated.
