Kwaw Kese To Sue Ghana Police Over 2015 Arrest, Asks For $1m Compensation

Kwaw Kese remains resentful over his 2015 arrest, which he deems unjust, and is now looking to address the infamous incident where he was arrested for smoking marijuana in public.

The Ghanaian rapper and product of Hammer’s Lat 2 camp, expressed to Hitz FM that, as a prominent figure with significant influence as far as entertainment in Ghana is concerned, the treatment he received from the police was unacceptable.

He claims to possess evidence implicating foreign nationals who openly smoke under police protection. Consequently, he has stated his intention to pursue a $1million compensation claim against the Police Service alongside his legal counsel for his arrest and subsequent conviction in 2015.

“There’s nothing to show to prove that I was smoking [in public]. I can show you prove of foreign nationals smoking in public with police protecting them with guns. Ghana Police did not treat me right and these are some of the things I see and I say that Ghana police service did not treat me right.

“I am requesting for a one million dollars from Ghana Police for putting me through that. I will let my lawyers follow up with it,” he told host, Andy Dosty.

Kwaw Kese was apprehended by the police in Kumasi in November 2014 on suspicion of smoking marijuana.

The arrest took place at around 2am the day after his performance at the Old Sku Reunion event hosted by Kumasi-based Luv FM. Kwaw was found smoking weed with a group of friends at a popular hangout spot called Plus 2 (Ahodwo).

In April 2015, High Court judge William Boampong sentenced Kwaw Kese to one day in jail and imposed a fine of Gh¢1,200. Before his release on bail on December 30, 2014, Kwaw had spent over a month in remand at the Kumasi Central Prison.
