‘Let’s Get It On’ Copyright Case: Ed Sheeran Not Guilty Of Plagiarism

The US court found no evidence that Ed Sheeran had plagiarised Let’s Get It On by Marvin Gaye for Thinking Out Loud. The British musician swore he didn’t steal any of the song’s components for his 2014 smash hit.

Sheeran, Warner Music Group, and Sony Music Publishing were sued by the heirs of Gaye’s co-writer for alleged copyright infringement.

A report from the New York trial claims that Sheeran promised to end his music career if he was found guilty. When asked how much time and energy the trial in Manhattan federal court was costing him, he responded, “If that happens, I’m done, I’m stopping.”

After the jury decided that Sheeran’s song was “independently” created, he apparently stood up and hugged his team. Sheeran performed Thinking Out Loud on guitar and sang during the civil trial.

In the latest entertainment news today he stated that, he co-wrote the song with his friend Amy Wadge in England, drawing inspiration from his grandparents and a new romantic relationship he had just begun.

During closing arguments, Ilene Farkas, a lawyer for Sheeran, told the jury that the resemblances between the two songs’ chord progressions and rhythms were “the letters of the alphabet of music.”

Keisha Rice, who defended Gaye’s co-writer Ed Townsend’s heirs, stated that her clients weren’t trying to claim ownership over individual musical parts, but rather “the way in which these common elements were uniquely combined.”

After telling the jury, “Mr. Sheeran is counting on you to be very, very overwhelmed by his commercial success,” she urged them to use their “common sense” to determine whether or not the songs are similar.
