Man Who Tied 9-Year-Old Boy To Orange Tree Surrenders To Police

A Ghanaian man who tied a 9-year-old boy to a tree has emerged from his hideout and presented himself to the police to assist in the investigation process.

Mr Timothy Gyamfi Mensah, a retired educationist, has been identified as the culprit. The 74-year-old man tied a 9-year-old boy to an orange tree in the Oti Region village of Akaa because he stole from him.

On August 9, 2023, he emerged from his hiding place in Kumasi and went to the police. In a widely shared social media video from a week ago, Mr Gyamfi was seen allegedly tying the victim with a nylon rope for allegedly stealing two oranges without authorization.

Since then, the victim has been saved by the police, and they have launched an inquiry by looking for the educationist. After giving his evidence, Mr. Gyamfi—who had been accompanied to the police station by Nana Oppong Kyekyeku IV, the Chief of Akaa, Nana Agyedu Asiedu, the Chief of Atonkor, Nana Nkansa of Atonkor, and Mr. Entwi Baikaa, an Akaa resident, among others—was given bail.

In a phone interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA), Mr. Baikaa, a government appointee at the Jasikan Municipal Assembly and acting assemblyman for the Akaa Electoral Area, revealed that two other children who were eyewitnesses to the incident were also questioned.

He claimed that on Monday, August 14, the accused was required to bring three additional kids from the community to the police station for questioning.
