Mohammad Kudus Explains Why He Wasn’t Given A Yellow Card For Taking Off His Shirt When He Dedicated His Goal to Atsu

In the 84th minute, Kudus scored a brilliant free kick to cap off a 4-0 home win for Ajax over Sparta Rotterdam. Ajax won the three points they needed at the Johan Cruyff Arena thanks to goals from Dusan Tadic and Kenneth Taylor.

As a result of the earthquake that struck Turkey and Syria on February 6, 2023, Christian Atsu was unable to escape. His body was discovered under the rubble on February 18 after a 12-day search and was flown from Turkey to Ghana on Sunday 19, February 2023.

The 22-year-old marked his 14th goal for the season in all competitions for the Dutch Eredivisie giants with an emotional tribute to the late Ghanaian footballer Christian Atsu.

Kudus explained why the referee, Pol van Boeke, did not show him a yellow card for taking off his shirt during play.

We have football rules but this is beyond football, this is about life and death. The referee told me it’s not allowed (shirt removal) but he understands because this is a bigger situation than football. A Big respect from me to the referee.

Meanwhile, the Vice President of Ghana, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia announced at the Kotoka International Airport on February 19, 2023, that Christian Atsu would be given a proper burial. Bawumia, during the brief ceremony to receive his remains, expressed his condolences to the family and emphasized that Atsu was a worthy son of Ghana who will be given a proper burial.
