MTN Assures Customers Of No Impact On MOMO Account Despite Sim Block

MTN, the largest telecommunications company in Ghana, has reassured its consumers that their Mobile Money (MoMo) accounts are safe, even if they lose their phone numbers because they haven’t re-registered their SIM cards.

The CEO of MTN Ghana, Selorm Adadevoh, has stated that all users who lose their numbers will be guided through a procedure to access their money.

He stated that although the accounts will be marked inactive, the money will still be accessible to consumers who provide the necessary identification.

“We do have provision in the Payment System and Services Act about how to treat funds that have not been accessed; essentially, they will be treated as dormant funds, and you can redeem them at some point in time with the right identification and processes,” Selorm Adadevoh said.

The SIM card re-registration process will end today, May 31, 2023. According to the National Communications Authority (NCA) and the Ministry of Communications, any SIM card that has not been re-registered will be disabled or disconnected. However, they haven’t revealed what happens after that for those customers just yet.

The Ministry of Communications have extended the SIM card registration period many times to accommodate users who have not yet received their Ghana cards.

The government has since issued a warning that the deadline for SIM card re-registration will not be further extended. If a subscriber forgets to re-register their SIM card, they will no longer be able to make or receive calls or texts.
