Multi-Storey Building Collapses In Lagos Nigeria

A multi-storey building under construction located in Banana Island, Ikoyi area of Lagos State, Nigeria, collapsed on Wednesday, April 12, 2023.

The incident occurred at approximately 6:13 p.m. on a construction site where personnel were conducting their duties. The structure collapsed after some construction workers had departed for the day, according to information obtained by the Tru News Report. However, several of them were injured as a consequence of the fall.

Amodu Shakiri, who is the spokesperson for the Lagos Fire and Rescue Service, stated that “We got a call around 3:58 pm. We are currently trying to ascertain the claim that no one was under the rubble.”

Mukaila Sanusi, the ministry’s spokeswoman for physical planning and urban development, issued a statement on Wednesday stating that the structure had not been approved for construction. He assured everyone that there were no fatalities and that those who were hurt were attended to. 

Mr. Sanusi mentioned that an investigation into the building’s approval had been requested by Tayo Bamgbose-Martins, the state’s commissioner of Physical Planning and Urban Development. The statement read:

“An unapproved 7-floor building under construction has collapsed in Banana Island, Lagos State, this evening,” the statement said. Few who sustained injuries are being treated. There is no fatality. This unfortunate incident happened while casting was being done.

“The Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Engr. Tayo Bamgbose-Martins was immediately on site to assess the situation and flag- off investigation. We ask members of the public to remain calm and expect further information from the ministry as we know more.”
