“NPP Gov’t Is Attacking JM For Proposing To Scrap Ex-Gratia But I Support The Cancellation” – Clement Apaak

Dr. Clement Apaak, the member of parliament for Builsa South, has said he completely supports former President John Dramani Mahama’s vow to eliminate the remuneration system for Article 71 office holders.

On March 2, 2023, Ghana’s former president John Dramani Mahama announced that he would run for president again in 2024. He made a number of interesting promises for the country. A well-run event was held at the University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS) in the Volta Region, where many supporters and leaders of the National Democratic Congress gathered. He pledged to eliminate the ex-gratia retirement pension provided to top government officials under Article 71.

“Surprised the NADAA/Bawumia NPP gov’t is attacking JM for proposing to scrap ex-gratia? Don’t be, they have made their wives (1st and 2nd Ladies) beneficiaries of article 71 emoluments. This has never happened, it’s the first in the history of Ghana.” Mr. Apaak stated.

Mr. Apaak, who has benefited from the ex-gratia system, has stated his entire support for its abolition and has urged all other beneficiaries to take the initiative in advocating for its cancellation instead of opposing it.

“I have been and remain a beneficiary of ex-gratia as an article 71 office holder. I served as a Prez Staffer, and now a two term MP. I support JM’s call, as also called for by Ghanaians, to scrap it. We the beneficiaries must lead the charge to scrap it in the national interest,” he added.
