Omah Lay’s Biography

Stanley Omah Didia is a Nigerian vocalist and songwriter professionally known as Omah Lay. He grew up in the city of Port Harcourt, Nigeria. He was born on 19 May 1997 in Egbeda, Emohua, Rivers Local Government Area, in the state of Rivers.

Prior to enrolling at the University of Port Harcourt, he attended Comprehensive High School in Rivers State. Before he passed away in 1977, his grandfather performed with the singer Celestine Ukwu. Lay’s father was a drummer.

Music Career

Omah Lay began his career as a member of a reggae group known as “Lil King.” In April 2019, he released “Do Not Disturb” as a result of his songwriting and music production work, for which he received little credit. The song “Hello Brother” was released one month later.

In June of 2019, he signed with the record label KeyQaad and then took a seven-month hiatus. During the break, he worked on “Get Layd,” his debut EP.

On February 14, 2020, Lay released “You,” his debut single. His five-track debut EP, “Get Layd“, was released on May 22, 2020. The EP peaked at number one on the Apple Music listings in Nigeria. Each of the EP’s five tracks reached the top 15 of the Apple Music listings in Nigeria, with “You” reaching the top spot.

In October, Lay appeared on the track “Infinity” from Olamide’s album Carpe Diem, which dominated the Nigerian Apple Music charts.

What Have We Done,” Lay’s second five-track EP, was released on November 20. All five songs reached the top 12 on the Nigerian Apple Music listings, with “Godly” reaching the top spot.

Lay was the first African artist to be highlighted by Apple’s Africa Rising Campaign on July 3, 2020. He was included on BBC Radio 1Xtra’s annual “Hot for 2021” selection in December 2020. He was the first African artist to be featured on Audiomack’s #UpNow programme for emerging artists; he was designated one of the “20 artists to watch in 2021” by the Montreux Jazz Festival; and he was named BET’s Amplified International Artist of the Month for November 2020.

Currently, he is under contract with Dvpper Music Distribution in Nigeria and Sire Records for international distribution.

He won the Next Rated award at the 2020 Headies Awards, for which he was nominated in four categories.

On 25 June 2021, Lay and fellow Nigerian vocalist Alpha P were featured on the official remix of Canadian singer Justin Bieber’s single “Peaches” by Nigerian producer Masterkraft. Lay’s new single “Understand” was released on 8 July 2021. “Attention” is the second collaboration between the two artists and was published on 3 March 2022.
