Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu Resigns From His Position As Majority Leader In Parliament

Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, the Member of Parliament for Suame and the Minister for Parliamentary Affairs, has voluntarily resigned from his position as the Majority Leader in Parliament. He announced his decision at a meeting of the majority caucus on Wednesday, February 21, 2024, at the Jubilee House in Accra.

According to sources, Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu’s resignation was motivated by his desire to pave the way for a new leadership that can foster unity and harmony within the New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary group. He also expressed his gratitude to President Nana Akufo-Addo, the Speaker of Parliament, and his colleagues for their support and cooperation during his tenure as the Majority Leader.

Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu’s resignation comes amid reports of plans to replace him with Alexander Afenyo-Markin, the Member of Parliament for Effutu and the Deputy Majority Leader. Afenyo-Markin is said to have the backing of some influential members of the NPP, who believe that he can bring more dynamism and energy to the majority caucus.

Afenyo-Markin has confirmed his nomination as the new majority leader and has pledged to work with Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu and other members of the caucus to advance the agenda of the government and the party. He has also thanked Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu for his service and mentorship, and has described him as a “legend” and a “role model.”

Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu has been the Majority Leader since 2017 and has been a Member of Parliament since 1997. He is widely regarded as one of the most experienced and respected legislators in the country, and he has played a key role in shaping the laws and policies of the nation. He is also known for his eloquence, diplomacy, and integrity.

The change in the majority leadership is expected to be formally announced by the NPP General Secretary, John Boadu, within the next 24 hours. The change is also expected to bring clarity and stability to the majority caucus, which has been facing some challenges and divisions in recent times.

The majority caucus comprises 137 NPP Members of Parliament and one independent Member of Parliament, who together form the largest group in the 275-member Parliament. The majority caucus is responsible for supporting the government’s legislative agenda and electing the Speaker and other officers of Parliament.
